Have you ever noticed how an ailment of one body part can impact your overall wellness? That’s because the human body is not made up of separate parts, but rather many parts that are fully integrated. Your mouth is no exception. In fact, everyone’s mouth plays an integral role in overall health and not only in terms of nutrition intake. The condition of your mouth itself and the dental treatments you have can greatly influence your general health. With this in mind, Lake Highlands holistic dentist Dr. Ramsey relies on the safe and effective methods of holistic dentistry in order to provide you with healthier alternatives.
Removing Metal Fillings
Near the beginning of the 19th century, dentists discovered that certain metals could be used to fill cavities. Silver, gold or tin was softened and pressed into a cavity to restore the tooth’s form and function. Later in that same century, the heavy metal mercury was added to an amalgam of these metals; mercury served as a binding agent that made the amalgam stronger and more durable.
However, the use of mercury in fillings has long been a concern. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that the mercury in dental filings is bioaccumulative, meaning there is an increased concentration in organs and tissues of the body. The FDA website states: “Studies of healthy subjects with amalgam fillings have shown that mercury from exposure to mercury vapor bioaccumulates in certain tissues of the body including kidneys and brain.”
For these reasons, North Dallas holistic dentist Dr. Ramsey has not used amalgam fillings for more than 25 years. He can remove metal fillings from your mouth using a safe protocol and replace them with composite resin or tooth-colored fillings.
As the name suggests, tooth-colored fillings match the existing color of a tooth. Made of composite resin, the materials can be easily blended. Moreover, composite resin bonds with your remaining tooth structure thereby leaving you with a tooth that is stronger and less apt to crack under the normal pressure of biting and chewing. Metal fillings merely rest within the space that your dentist drills away.
Digital X-Rays for Holistic Health
Another service from your holistic dentist in Lake Highlands is digital x-rays. These provide a clearer image and use far less radiation—up to 90 percent less—than standard film x-rays. In addition, images are seen immediately on a chairside monitor.
